When I decided to try my hand at self publishing, I was going to edit and publish a book I had written 20 years earlier but had never done anything with. So I needed a way to spread the inhabitants of Earth across the near galaxy, yet separate them by both space and time, so as to further accentuate those differences. There is already so much diversity between cultures and races right here on this little world (don’t get me started about creatures under the sea) that many of us seem as ‘alien’ to one another as if we had come from distant stars. I had always envisioned a story universe that was just the civilizations and cultures of Earth, but spread out across the galaxy. ![]() ![]() Most aliens in sci fi seem to be silly versions of humans. For a year or two, in late adolescence, he attended – or rather, did not often attend – the Slade, forming a close relationship there with Rex Whistler and his brother, Laurence. The story goes that when Lord Glenconner once lined up his younger sons to ask them what they wanted to become, Stephen, to his father’s alarm, replied: ‘I want to be a Great Beauty, sir.’ The true centre of his emotional life now, and later, was his Cockney nurse Nannie Trusler. ![]() ![]() Tennant spent his childhood in the Glenconners’ mock-Jacobean mansion Wilsford Manor, in Wiltshire, being spoiled and doted upon by his mother (described by Hoare as a ‘dreamy beauty, yet with a steely will’) and seeing very little of his earnestly public-spirited father. I'm as into the story as she is, so it's great that we can share that. But she is still very very into the story, and it challenges her abilities in a great way. I have to go slowly and sometimes check that she's followed some of the implied social interactions. I read them to her (she still can't handle large chunks of text) and I define the larger words as we go.
